How are the cockerels raised?

All the cockerels supplied to customers are raised traditionally. We prioritise and value our animal's welfare and we believe wholeheartedly that our poultry should live happy outdoor lives. We aim to farm in an environmentally responsible way and are proud to be part of the today's group of farmers who are eco-minded, nature respecting and sustainability concerned. We dogedly & resolutely exclude chemicals and pollutants from our birds, animals and the environment we farm in. We are ethical farmers!

Are your cockerels Free Range?

Yes, all our cockerels are free range. They are free to forage for food from the surrounding farm grassland. The birds are allowed and encouraged to live more naturally in a secure farm enviroment with access to fresh grass, ample land space, fresh water, fresh air and much more.

Do You Mass Produce The Cockerelss?

No, we do not! We and our farming partners raise our flock in batches of between 150-300 at any one time, per bird type. For us it is about quality, not quantity.

How Long Do You Raise The Cockerels For?

All our cockerels are raised, slow-grown for a minimum of 125 days which is more than thrice the length of commercial birds you will find in the supermarket that are mass produced and raised for just about 35 days risking campylobacter bacteria & E-Coli bacteria infections. However, our birds get to enjoy full and a good quality life and they are humanely handled. They are culled at maturity, dry plucked and hung for an additional 7 days to enhance their meat & flavour before being dispatched to customers. This ensure quality and good tasting birds at your table.

Do You Buy in Cockerels From other Farmers?

Yes, we do as we do not raise Cockerels by the thousands. To meet demand we do bring in poultry from our partners who resolutely practice free range farming as we do. When we have larger orders to fill which exceeds our own capacity, it is sensible to source our suppliers from elsewhere. Buyers on request are notified & advised. The quality of the birds we source through our partners are of the same very high standard. The Canaan Life Farms guarantee remains the unchanged.

Are your birds all free ranging?

Yes, they are! All our Cockerels are absolutely free ranging. They forage freely in open grassland though their diet is supplemented with specially formualted feed packed with nutrients and essentials for maximum health, thus resulting in good quality meat and taste.

Do you feed your Cockerels corn?

Our Cockerels are fed a maize rich additive-free cereal supplement from our trusted feed mill. This is an extra treat for our chickens which is perfect for slower growing birds. The mixed corn feed includes home grown wheat, barley and oats with additional black sunflower seeds and maize.

Do you sell Cockerels at Markets?

Because our Cockerels are not reared on a large scale and due to a higher pre-booked orders, we do not have enough left over to take to the markets. We currently supply both the residential and limited commercial outlets, especially at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons or at special occasions.

How are the Cockerels packaged?
Each Cockerels we sell is trussed ensuring that the legs and wings are firmly fastened against the body. This helps the chicken maintain its shape and cook evenly without drying out any of the extremities. It is the wrapped in greaseproof paper. Each bird comes with cooking instructions and a pop-up thermometer. Our shipping boxes have double insulation and are surrounded by a cooling pack to ensure each bird remains fresh and nice!

When Should I Order My Cockerels?

For Easter, thanksgiving & Christmas, you are well advised to have place your orders at least a month in advance. There is a high demand for good quality Cockerels, therefore to avoid disappoitments, customers are strongly advised to order as early as possible. If we are unable to meet your order, you will be notified well in advance to avoid further disappointments.
